Design Miami/ announces the first edition of Podium in Shanghai, China
Shanghai, June 29, 2021 - Design Miami/ announces the first edition of Design Miami/Podium in Shanghai this November 4 – 14, 2021. Presented in partnership with Made in House and co-hosted by Hantang Culture, Design Miami/Podium x Shanghai is Design Miami’s first collectible design event in Asia. Coinciding with Shanghai Art Week, Design Miami/Podium x Shanghai will take place on the city’s historic Bund at No. 1 Wai Tan Yuan, the former British Consulate and one of the oldest foreign-built buildings in Shanghai. Curated by outgoing Curatorial Director, Aric Chen, and Deputy Curator, Violet Ruhui Wang, the exhibition will explore the theme, “Wu Gan: The Art of Design” and will look at design as an art form through 20th century and contemporary works, while drawing on Chinese culture’s historical relationship with fine objects to prompt new interpretations in a contemporary, global context.
Since 2005, Design Miami/ has become the global forum for collectible design, with biannual events that bring together the design world’s most influential players. In December 2020 Design Miami/ expanded its offering and created Design Miami/Podium - a new traveling selling exhibition and event concept ideally positioned to enter new markets around the world and first launched at the Moore Building in Miami, Florida. The Podium concept is a selling exhibition that features a unique showcase of one-of-a-kind collectible design objects and collections by select international and regional galleries and studios alike.
As a hybrid event, all exhibited works at Design Miami/Podium x Shanghai will be available to purchase for a limited time both in-person and online at designmiami.com. The online event experience will run in parallel to the physical exhibition and will feature a click-to-collect shopping experience, interactive 3D tours, virtual programming, brand partner installations, designer spotlights, and more.
Jennifer Roberts, CEO, Design Miami/ said: In addition to being a beautiful, international city with a sophisticated art loving public, Shanghai’s rapid growth has meant a boom in design and we are seeing an exciting new wave of designers embracing traditional Chinese forms, materials and techniques. This is the first time a collectible design exhibition of this caliber is coming to Shanghai, and Design Miami’s entrance into China presents an exciting platform to connect international and local design collectors, experts and enthusiasts and to celebrate and elevate the unique design sensibilities coming out of the country. Together with our partner Chris Shao of Made in House, locally based curatorial director, Aric Chen, and deputy curator, Violet Ruhui Wang, we look forward to presenting Design Miami/Podium x Shanghai this November 2021.
