Design Miami.Paris concludes successful second edition at L'hôtel de Maisons

October 21, 2024, Paris - The second edition of Design Miami.Paris concluded yesterday, following a highly successful six day run over October 15-20 which welcomed 30 international exhibitor presentations to the city's historic 18th century mansion, L'hôtel de Maisons, showcasing rare and unique displays of historic and contemporary collectible design across the mansion and through the courtyard and gardens.

"Our return to Paris came with high expectations following the success of our inaugural edition. On preview day, we were thrilled to welcome a four-fold increase in visitors compared to last year, with strong international representation, marking a clear sign of confidence in our new Paris flagship and this growing moment in Paris each October. The energy in the city was palpable through the week, and clearly reflected in strong sales across our contemporary and historic program". - Jen Roberts, CEO, Design Miami

Notable Attendees.

Now marking a key moment on the annual design calendar, the fair was met by a very positive reception from an international list of notable attendees from across design, fashion, entertainment, and beyond, including: Natalie Portman, Actor; Owen Wilson, Actor; Norman Foster, Architect; Raf Simons, Fashion Designer; India Mahdavi, Interior Designer; and an international list of designers including Sabine Marcelis, Ini Archibong, Bradley Bowers, and Dr. Samuel Ross.

Gallery Highlights & Key Sales.

The high attendance was reflected in strong sales through the week. Preview day saw the sale of Galerie Downtown-LAFFANOUR (Paris)'s full-scale Jean Prouvé post-war prefabricated house (1946). The house, which won the fair's Best Design at Large Presentation, sold for over €1,000,000.

Other early sales came from Salon 94 Design (New York), including fashion designer Rick Owens' pair of Tomb Chairs (2023), situated in the gardens as part of the Design at Large program, with each chair selling for £40,000. The gallery's indoor presentation also saw the sale of rare works by Gaetano Pesce, including his Palladio Cabinet (Milk colored protype) (2007) (£150,000-£180,000); Flower Origami Table (2023) (£150,000-£180,000); in addition to a range of Pesce vases sold for £20,000-£30,000.

A number of key trends were visible across the historic and contemporary programming. There was a notable embrace of slow-craft, and refined luxury. Galerie Desprez-Bréhéret (Paris) and Galerie Gastou (Paris)'s award winning Best Gallery Presentation offered a collaborative room filled with the works of Jean Touret, whose creations are grounded in a philosophy that values simplistic integrity, utilizing wood and iron to conceive functional designs to serve an essential purpose. Meanwhile, Maxime Flatry (Paris), reported the sale of its full Paul Dupré-Lafon set (circa 1930), a sofa and two armchairs upholstered in monochromatic white cotton velvet, demonstrating a strength in simplicity of form.

An embrace of alternative materials was visible in a number of key presentations. From Fernando Laposse's avocado skin cabinets at Friedman Benda (New York/Paris/LA), to Gaetano Pesce's pressed felt. Another notable trend came in biomorphic and zoomorphic forms, from debut Design at Large exhibitor Giulia de Jonckheere’s (Geneva) bronze cast Clotilde Ancarani works, including Rhubarb leaf sculptures, and a table in the form of giant Gunnera manicata leaves, to Galerie Mitterrand (Paris)'s Lalanne sheep sculptures grazing the Design at Large sculpture garden.

Partner Highlights.

Alongside the gallery exhibitions, Design Miami invited designers, businesses, institutions, and brands to present newly commissioned works of design, creating unique exhibitions with strong curatorial and educational perspectives. Upon entering the historic hôtel particulier, guests were greeted by a sweeping floor covering by Trish Anderson, climbing the mansion's central staircase in a spectrum of color: introducing SCAD's (Savannah College of Art and Design) presentation, which highlighted the innovative practices of artists from the university’s prestigious fibers, furniture design, industrial design, and interior design programs, including Trish Andersen, Lærke Lillelund, Bradley Bowers, and Eny Lee Parker.

Louis Vuitton made its debut exhibition at Design Miami.Paris, presenting two iconic works by the Campana Brothers: the Bulbo chair and Merengue ottoman, both defined by monochrome blue, bold forms, presented in striking contrast to the ornate rooms of L’hôtel de Maisons. Meanwhile, MycoWorks presented explorations into the possibilities of REISHI - a new sustainable material woven from mycelium, interpreted by seven creatives: Sophie Dries, Anna Le Corno, Josephine Fossey, Pauline Guerrier, Marion Mailaender, Fanny Perrier, and Sarah Valente.

Upcoming Fair.

This December, Design Miami. will return to its established location at Pride Park for the milestone 20th edition of its Miami flagship fair. Taking place between December 4-8, 2024, with Preview Day on December 3, the fair will welcome an international array of gallery and Curio exhibitions, presented alongside a rich program of partnerships, collaborations, and design talks. Under the special edition's curatorial director Glenn Adamson’s chosen theme, Blue Sky, world-leading galleries will present contemporary and historic highlights that demonstrate the power of a ‘blue sky thinking’ approach to design - past, present, and future.
